Narrative Description of Project:

Port of Namibe, the third biggest port in Angola, plays a strategic coastal port for economic development of the southern part of the country.  Rehabilitation of the existing general cargo terminal in the port is scheduled to start soon as a Japanese Grant Aid Project.  However, the handling cargo volume has been increasing more rapidly than expected, and the cargo demand may exceed the terminal capacity in 2010 even if such Grand Aid Project is implemented.  To accelerate the port activities as a hub port in the west coast of Africa for handling the container cargo, two (2) sub-projects are envisaged, that is, Namibe Port New Container Terminal Development Project, and Sacomar Port Rehabilitation Project. Pre-feasibility study on these sub-projects was conducted from August 2008 to January 2009, and the former sub-project (Phase I) will comprise the dredging, construction of breakwater, seawalls, –14 m container wharf, trestle, container terminal and access road, and procurement of container handling equipment.

Description of Actual Services Provided by Your Staff:

The consulting services provided by our staff cover the following :

1)  Study on New Container Terminal Development in Namibe Port, including the demand forecast of container cargo, natural conditions study, port planning conditions, design conditions of container terminal, port facility layout plan, container terminal layout plan, conceptual design of port facilities, construction schedule, and construction and equipment procurement cost estimate; and

2)  Study on Rehabilitation Plan of Sacomar Port, including the deterioration survey of existing iron ore handling facilities, and proposal for preliminary rehabilitation plan.
