Narrative Description of Project:

This project is aimed at construction of a new container terminal in front of the coast at a site west of Kipevu Oil Terminal with an area of 100 ha in total (the New Terminal) with Phase I planned to commence at the beginning of year 2010 up to November 2015, while Phases II and III are expected to be implemented 2015 – 2019 and 2019 – 2023, respectively.  The project is designed to provide the required container handling capacity towards the target year of 2025.  Phase I of the project consists of the following :

1)         Construction of 2 main berths, i.e., Berth No. 20 (water depth: 11m) and No. 21 (water depth: 15m), and a Small Berth (water depth: 4.5m);

2)       Construction of Apron, Container Yard and Yard Roads. Rail Tracks behind the berths;

3)       Construction of Inner Roads at the back of Container Terminal;

4)       Construction of Access Road from Road No. C110 to the New Terminal and Parking Areas;

5)       Construction of main Buildings in the Terminal;

6)       Dredging of Approach Channel and Turning Basins in front of Berth Nos. 20 and 21, and Small Berth;

7)       Construction of Utilities for supply of water and electricity, communications, sewage, security, etc.;

8)       Procurement of Equipment (2 SSG, 6 RTG, etc.); and

9)       Other Miscellaneous Works.

The other miscellaneous works include extension of the railway and road in the existing container terminal to the New Terminal, and installation of leading lights on the quay and marker buoys at the channel and basins, and others.

Description of Actual Services Provided by Your Staff:

The consulting services provided by our staff cover the following :

1)      Natural conditions surveys and laboratory tests, and traffic survey;

2)       Review of terminal plan;

3)       Detailed designs, cost estimates, construction plan of the project facilities and equipment;

4)       Prequalification and bidding documents including specifications and drawings for construction and procurement of project facilities and equipment;

5)       Environmental management;

6)       Land acquisition and resettlement;

7)       Tender assistance;

8)       Construction and procurement supervision;

9)       Development and implementation of HIV/AIDS prevention program;

10)    Technology transfer to Kenyan Government, Owner and related local institutions; and

11)    Required reports and documents.
