Mombasa Port is a major gateway port for seaborne trade in Kenya.  The port currently handling approx. 500,000 TEUs per year is urgently required for improvement and / or expansion of the existing port facilities to cope with the forecasted container handling demand of 1 million TEUs per year in 2025.

Narrative Description of Project:

Mombasa Port is a major gateway port for seaborne trade in Kenya.  The port currently handling approx. 500,000 TEUs per year is urgently required for improvement and / or expansion of the existing port facilities to cope with the forecasted container handling demand of 1 million TEUs per year in 2025.

Under the said situation, the Government of Kenya decided to construct a new container terminal with a depth of –15 m to accommodate post-panamax ships, and to improve the existing navigation channel and secure new turning and anchorage basins in front of the new container terminal.  The project consists of capital dredging to provide new navigation channel with navigation aids and new turning and anchorage basins, and maintenance dredging of port basins in front of the existing berths.

Description of Actual Services Provided by Your Staff:

The consulting services provided by our staff cover the following :

1)        Study and preparation of bidding documents for the hydrographic surveys (bathymetric survey, seismic survey, SS density measurement and current / tide measurements) and other site surveys (soil boring and seabed material analysis);

2)       Layout plan for the improved navigation channel with navigation aids;

3)       Numerical simulations on sedimentation / siltation in the channel;

4)       Ship navigation simulation studies for the improved navigation channel;

5)       Detailed design of the improved navigation channel with navigation aids;

6)       Bidding documents for capital dredging, navigation aids, and maintenance dredging;

7)       Assistance in bidding and contract procedures;

8)       Supervision and management of hydrographic and other site surveys, capital and maintenance dredging works, and installation of navigation aids; and

9)       Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
