Brief Project Description
Existing Cua Lo port has started operation of 4 berths since 2002. However, due to sedimentation originated from the Cua Lo and Cua Hoi rivers, depth of the approach channel is maintained only CDL-5.5m. As a result, the port can be operated for the ships smaller than 8,000 DWT and cargo handling volume of the port is therefore only about 1.2 million tons per year, which is under designed capacity.
Recently, demand of cargo import and export through Cua Lo Port is increasing rapidly while cargo handling capacity of the existing port is limited. In such circumstances, Nghe An People Committee held a conference on 16 December 2009 with participation of related authorities and parties, including Vinamarine, Nghe An Province’s Departments, representatives of related districts and communes of Soth East Nghe An Economic Zone (SENAEZ), as well as scientist, professors and doctors who are specialized in Port and waterway field.
In the conference above, it is confirmed that planning and construction of Cua Lo Port (to be general and container deep seaport) is in compliance with the Party and Government’s policy and actual demand. The development plan will promote advantages of Nghe An province, which is a large province with abundant natural resources; industry, tourism and services’s developing potentials in North Central Part. The development of Cua Lo Port will create development incentives for Nghe An province which will develop basically Nghe An province to be industrial province in the year 2020.
In such circumstances described above, to cope with the rapid increase of cargo demand not only in Nghe An province but also in the hinterland countries, Laos and Cambodia, Cua Lo deep seaport is planned in three (3) phases as shown in Figure 1-1.
